WRITING FOR FILM, TELEVISION AND STREAMING PRODUCTION – MASTER CLASS

Would your book, story, idea, or script make a great film? If you think your story has true potential, this is your next step!

Writing for Film, Television and Streaming Production is a hands-on, in-person immersion experience, taught by my longtime friend and colleague, Nickolas Potter. Nick is an award-winning screenwriter. You can read his bio below.

By being able to anticipate what your movie set will look and feel like in terms of cast, crew, directors and producers working as a team, you can learn to write your script in a way that will attract and encourage producers, investors, directors and actors to pick up the project for its professional and practical merits, as well as for its creative ones.

Learn how to write a script from scratch, keeping in mind what takes place during film production!

Producers bypass screenplays that do not include production cues. If you want to increase your chances of having a screenplay considered, you have to come across as a professional. That means, add the production cues!

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this Masterclass, you will gain a clear understanding of:

  • Character intros
  • Casting
  • Props
  • Brand name props
  • Sound effects
  • Costume/wardrobe
  • Make-up
  • Location
  • Set design
  • Camera angles
  • POV
  • Direction
  • Collaborating with actors
  • Dialogue
  • Environment
  • Film editing
  • Budget
  • Scheduling
  • Shooting out of seq

But that’s not all! You will participate in group-writing a short film from scratch. The group will collaboratively choose and create the:

  • GENRE
  • STORYLINE
  • MAIN CHARACTER
  • SUPPORTING CHARACTERS
  • SETTING
  • BACKSTORY
  • OBSTACLE and/or MESSAGE

The group will then use those elements to group-write a 20 to 40-page screenplay tailor-made to be shot A) economically, B) efficiently, and C) with technical impeccability.

Prior to writing the short film, the group will also view technically challenging scenes from popular films and discuss how those scenes were written, how they were shot, and why they were shot that way.

Imagine being able to take what you learn and apply it to your own project! This is your opportunity to learn valuable new skills!

INSTRUCTOR

NICKOLAS POTTERNICKOLAS POTTER is an award-winning screenwriter with 38 years of experience in writing and editing screenplays and turning books and story ideas into successful scripts. He is a graduate of the prestigious University of Southern California’s Master of Professional Writing Program, with an emphasis in screenwriting.

Nick wrote and produced a triple award-winning feature film called, RETREAT, a 98-minute drama. RETREAT won “Best Feature Film” at the Telluride Film Festival and the Key West Film Festival; “Best Feature-Length Drama” at the Woods Hole International Film Festival on Cape Cod; the “Audience Choice Award” at the Woods Hole International Film Festival on Cape Cod; and was screened at the European Film Market in Berlin.

RETREAT has been distributed in 92 countries outside the United States, and was purchased as a television movie of the week by Ziff Davis and Lyme TV inside the United States. Additionally, RETREAT was distributed globally as the “Feature of the Month” by Stephen Simon (Somewhere in Time, What Dreams May Come) through The Spiritual Cinema Circle.

After the success of RETREAT, Nick worked in script acquisitions at Disney Studios, Tapestry Films, and 1492 Productions for Chris Columbus, Mark Radcliffe, and Michael Barnathan as a proofreader, and at International Creative Management (ICM) in the Literary Department.

In these positions, Nick discovered the reasons why certain scripts were purchased or picked up for representation while others were passed over. He brings this knowledge and experience to you, knowing full well that what you are really working toward is a movie deal, rather than a lovely but unsold screenplay.

Nick loves to see his students succeed!

As a teacher and coach, Nick will focus on maximizing your likelihood of having your script sold or produced, simply by learning how to write it in a way that will make you most attractive to decision-makers, based on your script’s technical and practical merits, as well as your creativity.

Without first-hand production and movie set experience, understanding what investors, producers, directors, and critical actors look for when choosing a project can be difficult but can also be taught and learned. A script is not just a story; a script is a blueprint for movie production. Nobody wants an unnecessarily complicated movie set or an unnecessarily expensive project to shoot. Nick designs his courses to help writers think like filmmakers, rather than simply as storytellers – and that key difference will vastly improve your odds of seeing your project go all the way.

“From our first conversation, it was clear Nick Potter and I were on the same page. I sent him my loglines and he recommended we work on two scripts. Based on the excellent advice he provided, I was able to improve my first script and learned the tools necessary to improve my second one. Right now, thanks to Nick’s efforts, one of my scripts is being read by a top agency!” – Bob Tremblay
